This Thanksgiving, we decided to head to Victoria, BC in Canada for some time away. We took our car and dog on the ferry from Port Angeles and stayed in a great Airbnb in Sooke (West of Victoria). In general, Victoria seemed very celiac-friendly and every grocery store we went to had options. Our favorite places and products are listed below!
Restaurants (links to full reviews):
- Fairmont Empress Afternoon Tea (gluten free desserts and savory sandwiches)
- Bin 4 Burger Lounge (best burgers around)
- New York Fries (gluten free poutine!)
Dedicated Gluten Free Bakeries:
- Laughing Daughters – on Salt Spring Island (which we highly recommend!)
- Origin Bakery – in Downtown Victoria (we didn’t visit here)
Products (we cooked a lot in our Airbnb kitchen):
- Stella’s Gluten Free Perogies (found in the freezer section at Western Foods if you are in Sooke)
- Bake My Day Sausage Rolls, Spanakopita, and Fruit Turnovers (soooo good!)
- Kinnikinnick Graham Crackers and Vanilla Wafers (I think I’ve seen these in the US too, but the vanilla wafers could hold with own in a blind taste test with gluten ones!)
- Lays Ketchup Chips (a must when in Canada)
- Cadbury Chocolate (it’s better in Canada)
- Schar Chocolatly Dipped Cookies (my new go-to s’more option)
The BEST s’mores
Added cheese on top!
Places we didn’t get too but heard good things about:
- The Fish Store – gf fish and chips!
- The Fish Hook
- Bard and Banker – I called them and they do gf grilled fish but not battered
- The Mantra Indian Cuisine
- Tim Hortons – we didn’t go this trip, but currently all of their beverages are GF and they have a certified GF coconut macaroom
